Residential Security: What You Should Know

Residential alarm systems, also known as residential security systems, are an integral part of the modern home. Often comprised of several components, a residential alarm system can be, and often is, a part of a wider residential logistics package. This simply means that, during the course of home construction, your security needs are considered to be part and parcel of the building process. In short, your security system is put in place just like a new marble counter-top, or that Jacuzzi on your deck.

So, you might say to yourself, what should I consider when confronted with different residential security systems? It's true that there are many factors to consider--if you "bundle" your security into a larger residential logistics package, you may save money (and certainly time), but finances alone should not comprise the basis of your purchase decision. Features, both with respect to what is included, and, perhaps more importantly, what isn't included in a particular product, should always be considered when comparing residential alarm systems.

For example, nearly all modern security suites have multiple features which can be ordered at or before installation. However, two of these features should be of primary importance when shopping for home security:

  • Home CCTV (Closed Circuit TV): In basic terms, this is a network of security cameras. This network will provide a real-time video feed, both to you (sometimes, but not always), and to the company through which your security services are provided. Home CCTV is a fantastic feature, because, in the event you do experience an unauthorized entry into your home, and such footage is captured by your camera network, it is both useful in identifying suspects, and as evidence at any legal proceedings.
  •  Home Alarm Monitoring: Home Alarm Monitoring is the basis of any good and reputable home security service. Without it, your security system(s) is / are useless, and a waste of money. Home alarm monitoring allows the security service the customer uses to detect fraudulent entry, dispatch emergency personnel (such as police, fire, and rescue agencies), as well as engaging in other activities designed to maintain the welfare of their clients.

To reiterate, without home alarm monitoring, any "undesirable element" who wishes to gain unauthorized entry into your home may do so at will, and do as they please, simply because there is, short of you or your loved ones, no one to prevent it. Fortunately, both CCTV & home monitoring are now standard on nearly all systems.

There are many more features to consider when purchasing a security package, such as simultaneous home computer network installation, home automation (your system will turn your lights on / off, etc), and various other amenities, which your security provider can discuss with you. However, the two features listed above should be of primary concern when making your purchase.

Now that you know what to look for, you can begin shopping for the security system and service which best fits the needs of yourself, your home, and your family.
